Description

The original MONTECILLO VINEYARD of Glen Ellen probably dates back to the period of the American Civil War, or roughly the early 1860s. It is possible they may even go back to about 1857 when a neighboring vineyard, the “Thomas Nau” property was planted. The (Old Vine block) planted in the 1964, Montecillo Vineyards sits at 1800’ elevation on the Sonoma side of the Mayacamas Mountains above the town of Kenwood, just 680 yards from the Napa county line. This is old-school, mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, dry-farmed and grown on St. George rootstock in Red Hill clay loam soils on a California sprawl trellis system. Owned by Stewart Cellars, this vineyard was the backbone of the Kenwood Artist series Cabernets from the 1970s and 1980s, providing classic Cabernet Sauvignons flavors and aromas and plenty of structure from the mountain-grown tannins.
